Jan(et) Wakefield's Bio
“Your soul knows the geography of your destiny. Your soul alone has the map of your future; therefore, you can trust this indirect, oblique side of yourself. If you do, it will take you where you need to go, but more important it will teach you a kindness of rhythm in your journey.”
― John O'Donohue, Anam Cara: A Book of Celtic Wisdom

Welcome to English 106!
My name is Jan Wakefield and together we will traverse the next seven weeks of reading, critically thinking, learning, and exploring the craft of writing. Even if writing is not your favorite subject, I want to be the first to tell you that you can succeed in this class simply because I have done the same.
I started my educational journey in the field of aeronautical science. I was already well on my way to becoming a private pilot, so I decided to become an air traffic controller and work for the government. After two years of higher education, I discovered I was not passionate about science…but I was an excellent teacher!
I transferred to a Liberal Arts college in northern Arizona and made my way to teaching in a Waldorf school. When my son was in kindergarten, I went to graduate school and finished my Master’s degree in English. I immediately started teaching composition courses at a community college. That was twelve years ago! My son is now twenty and a sophomore at GCU.
My path to graduation was not direct, but I followed my heart and I am happy to be where I am. I want to encourage each of you to do the same. At GCU, I graduated with a second Master’s degree in Education (TESOL). I just started third Master's program in Psychology, with an emphasis in life coaching, to set the foundation for my future Ph.D. Teaching is my passion, and I look forward to working with each of you.
My belief is that we are a learning team, and everyone can succeed in this class. I am here to support your success so long as you are working toward it. Communication is very important to me. If you need something, reach out in the Individual Forum or via phone. Learning to write is actually easy! You can do this.
